Killala to Broadhaven

We woke in time for the 07:03 weather then dozed again until gone 0900. We took the rubbish ashore and went to the supermarket, a great little shop with an ice cream counter with good ice-creams, so that is what we had for breakfast. After that we headed for the convenient petrol station and bought 15 litres of diesel.

Downpatrick Head
At 11:25 we cast off and motored out, following our previous track across the bar. We got the main up and bent on the no1 jib, but the wind was virtually on the nose so we motor sailed. It was Sunday, and I love my Sunday lunches. Julian cooked pan fried duck breasts in plum and shallot sauce with broccoli and pseudo-roast potatoes. We also each had a small glass of wine. Yesterday Julian had adjusted the sensitivity on the tiller pilot, and it worked well while we enjoyed our meal. We had bright sunshine and a light but steady wind, which then died and we motored the rest of the day.

Lazer encounter
The sea stacks at Down Patrick Head are spectacular. There were people on the headland fishing with rods. Further along the coast line I spotted a very strange shape in the distance, as it passed us we could see that it was a laser dinghy attended by a big black rib. Later on we discovered that this was Gary Sargent, sailing around Ireland on behalf of blind children,www.onewildride.ie .

Kid Island
The swell got rather uncomfortable, so we went inshore to try to avoid it. This did help a little, and we did not encounter any overfalls, but the ride was a little rough, especially round Kid Island. Once we entered Broad Haven the wind came onto the beam and the swells went down, so the day ended with quite a good sail until we reached the anchorage by Ballyglass Pier.

We did not leave the boat that night, just relaxed after a long and interesting day.
